The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will support about 100,000 Nigerian farm households during the 2019 harvest season in Borno State.
Also, for greater self-sufficiency and independence from food assistance in 2020, they will receive the necessary seeds and resources and households.
This was announced by the representative of the FAO in Nigeria Suffian Koroma during a visit to the Farm Center in Maiduguri. He also said that about 400,000 agricultural kits have already been distributed to three million farmers in the rebel-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.
“Thanks to the active cooperation and leadership of the relevant government ministries, the agency annually provides individuals and their families seeds of agricultural crops, including corn, sorghum, millet and vigna,” said Suffian Koroma. According to him, training courses were also held on how to use improved resources to restore community livelihoods in the region.
“As we look forward to the results of the ongoing humanitarian needs study conducted by the FAO food security sector, which identifies the number of people in need of humanitarian support, I would like to remind everyone present that huge steps have been taken in the north-east of the country to reduce the number of people food shortages, ”said the FAO representative in Nigeria.
According to him, the total number of people in need of food assistance over the past two years has decreased from 2.6 to 1.7 million. And this improvement was a direct result of coordinated action by state and federal governments.
