Indian Food Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal launches a portal to monitor prices for tomatoes, onions and potatoes. To curb rising prices for certain types of agricultural products and bridge the gap between supply and demand, the government has developed a portal to monitor prices, sown areas, yields, production, imports and exports and other relevant information, such as crop calendars, crop agronomy in a convenient visual format for agricultural processors, traders and politicians.
To begin with, Market Intelligence and the Early Warning System (MIEWS) will monitor the prices of tomatoes, onions and potatoes - key ingredients in Indian cuisine - to alert government intervention.
“The government seeks to strike a balance between the interests of producers and consumers of farms through this monitoring system,” said Minister of Food Industry Harsimrat Kaur Badal at the launch of the portal.
According to the Hindu calendar in India there are 6 seasons: summer, autumn, winter, spring, monsoon season and winter season.
She added that the MIEWS system is designed to provide farmers with advice on preventing batch production, as well as providing early warning in situations of abuse to state governments.
According to the terms of the scheme, during an oversaturated situation, surplus products will be evacuated from production areas to consumption centers.
Sections such as prices and revenues, area, yield and production, crop agronomy and trade profiles will be available to the public, while regular and special market reports and price forecasts will be available only to politicians.
