Buckwheat sowing campaign this year was over with a big lag behind the plan. This is 45% less than it was on the same date in 2018, UkrAgroConsult analysts share information.
According to their preliminary data, the buckwheat crop this year has every chance of decreasing to a historic minimum due to very low crops.
Ukraine’s domestic demand will not be able to satisfy such a volume of crops and the country will have to purchase cereals and its processed products abroad.
Recall that during the 2017-2018 season, Ukraine purchased in other countries 48 thousand tons of buckwheat, which came mainly from the CIS countries. And this despite the fact that at that time the buckwheat harvest was enough to cover the domestic needs of the country.
An increase in the number of imported buckwheat supplies against the background of a large supply on the domestic market of Ukraine led to a rapid decline in product prices. This was the reason for the decrease in the profitability of its cultivation and, as a result, a noticeable reduction in sown area over the past 2 years.
Earlier it was reported that the farms of the Sumy region refuse to grow buckwheat due to its low profitability.
