The Scandinavian style in landscape design is now in trend, it is interesting for a domestic summer resident because it cannot stand pomposity and does not require expensive investments. Its main features are minimalism, simplicity in design and conciseness. In order to bring northern motives to the elements of your summer cottage, you should have elementary ecological literacy and present before your mind the landscape typical of Scandinavia.
Style features
The main features of this style should be called:
- coherence of all elements;
- naturalness;
- moderation in everything;
- simplicity.
Shrubs are given a round or square shape. The garden should be small - about 7-9 acres.Did you know? One of the characteristic features of Scandinavia — fjords — in fact, they are a very deep earth fault, occur up to 1.5 km, which were formed many thousands of years ago. Most of them are located in Norway.
Decor elements such as:
- cartwheels without spokes;
- antique garden tools;
- figures of gnomes, goblin or trolls.
A Scandinavian-style garden plot should be open; instead of wooden or stone fences, it is better to make fences from living plants. The flower beds should be divided into a rectangular shape and not fenced with clearly defined borders. Also, instead of flower beds, you can place pots or tubs on the site.
Water bodies and lawns should not have regular shapes. Around the pond, you need to plant wild plants. Artificial design elements should be abandoned; instead, stones, fallen tree trunks and boulders, randomly dispersed over the area are used.
What colors and materials are used
To create interior details of the Scandinavian style, a novice designer should use only natural materials, such as:
- a rock;
- wood.
Arbors, paths and benches should be made only of them. Plastic and iron will have to be abandoned. Tracks can be laid out with gravel or pebbles, but you should make sure that they are sanded naturally, not in production.
Did you know? In order to be able to grow plants such as bamboo and ground orchid on the site, it is necessary to create a special microclimate there. To do this, near the landings with these crops have an artificial reservoir.
Colors use pastel:
- light blue;
- pale green;
- light gray;
- beige.
A small occurrence of a bright scarlet or blue shade is allowed, but they should not distract all attention in the overall composition.
Minimalism
The owner of a large two-, three-story house, built in the Baroque or Art Nouveau style, will have to abandon the Scandinavian landscape design. It is suitable for buildings created with elements of minimalism. The shape of the structure should be simple and strict, with virtually no decor. The windows in these houses are large, on the ground floor or porch extend to the floor.
The color of the building should not differ in brightness, have light calm tones. The preferred materials used to decorate the building and its construction are stone and wood.Important! If after the construction of the cottage there were pieces of wood — do not throw them away. They are useful in creating benches or gazebos for the garden.
Buildings and constructions in the design of the garden
When creating a garden in the northern sample, it is necessary to use the following elements:
- Open one or more arbors.
- A lot of objects made of stone, figures or just boulders.
- Grottoes or a fireplace made of stone material, decorated with low flowering plants.
- Wicker coasters, baskets or furniture.
Important! When remaking an ordinary garden in this style, it is not necessary to demolish and do everything anew. Fast-growing flowers can simply be moved to large wooden containers, and plastic pots can be inserted into wicker baskets.
What plants to choose for the site
The main trees in the Scandinavian style garden should be conifers.
Of course:
- juniper;
- any kind of pine;
- thuja;
- spruce.
Any of the dwarf pine hybrids will do, moreover - undersized trees with decorative properties in this kind of landscape are welcome. Wooden tubs and granite containers with yews, boxwoods or hydrangeas are good in single compositions. Around the gazebos or garden swings should be planted plants that curl - hops, morning glory, clematis or ivy.
On the lawns you can plant asters, calendula, flax or phlox. Stone elements of the composition should be framed with semi-wild flowers - alpine cloves or Carpathian bell. Also, in the preparation of plant compositions, it is permissible to use field and cereal crops.
Creating a rockery
When creating a rockery, you should remember that this is the most important element of Scandinavian design. Stones do not just have to be arranged in a chaotic manner. Cobblestones and boulders should be arranged as if they had been displaced by natural forces during melting glacier or other cataclysm. In order to achieve naturalness in the creation of this element, you can search the Internet for landscapes of Norway or Finland and copy the arrangement of stones on one of the landscapes you like.
Garden furniture
Garden furniture should also be made from natural materials. Tables, chairs, armchairs and benches do not have to be just wooden. It is acceptable to use rattan wicker furniture. Just not its artificial counterpart, the smell of plastic will violate the whole impression of the compositions.
Furniture should not be placed in the center or in open areas. She should hide in small nooks or inside arbors. Are also suitable areas under the spreading crowns of pine trees, protected on all sides by hedges.Did you know? In northern countries, hockey is very popular. In Sweden, there is even a church dedicated to one of the varieties of this game.
Water body
When creating a landscape in the northern style, you must definitely make at least some kind of water element. If the site is small and you cannot make a full backwater on it, you can simply put a wooden container with water.
When creating a pond, stones and wooden driftwood should be used; the banks at the water body, whether it be a fountain or backwater, should be of irregular natural shape. Between stone boulders you can plant hygrophilous semi-wild flowers. But you should not overdo it with landscaping, plants on the shore of a pond must look harmonious.
Creating a garden in the northern style is not difficult. You just need to observe simplicity and naturalness and use only natural materials.
