A beautiful, well-kept green lawn is a great addition to the finishing touch to the overall picture of a suburban residential building. In addition, the emerald meadow is an indispensable attribute of parks, squares, lawns in front of various institutions. But such landscaping is a rather laborious task that requires knowledge, skills and patience. But it turns out that there is an opportunity to equip a beautiful and, most importantly, high-quality lawn on your own plot on your own and in a short time.
What is a roll lawn
- With all the undoubted advantages of a sowing lawn, it has a number of significant drawbacks:
- it takes time to get the result;
- special knowledge is needed in order to grow a quality clearing;
- you need to prepare the soil, level it and tamp;
- requires regular care;
- grows poorly in the shade, etc.
In addition, the sowing is a rather time-consuming task, requiring at least time and effort. And even if you have a desire to embody near the house the stereotype of the American way of life - an emerald lawn, the possibilities and the time for this, the result does not always meet your expectations. Properly organized care, a haircut and even the help of a specialist may not help - you will only find out after a couple of seasons.
Did you know? About 1 thousand grass blades grow on 1 m² of lawn. In addition, the green meadow is able to reduce noise by 8-10 dB.
In such a situation, there is an excellent solution - a rolled lawn. This is a completely natural turf layer with adult high-quality grass, completely devoid of weeds and perfectly taking root almost anywhere where the grass can grow at all.Among gardeners there is an opinion that such a lawn is a piece of turf rolled up into a roll. This statement is partly correct, but not entirely complete.
The structure of such a "lawn semi-finished product" depends on the method of cultivation and may include, in addition to the natural substrate and vegetation, a polymer net, geotextile or felt. These materials are used to form a denser root system and better flexibility of the turf layer so that it does not crumble when twisted. The thickness of the layer of fertile substrate under the rolled lawn should be at least 8-10 cm.
Among the most common plant species used in cultivation, we can distinguish the following:
- meadow and red fescue;
- shoot of a field
- pasture ryegrass.
This choice is not accidental - these herbs are resistant to frost and tolerate drought normally. When choosing a lawn, you should take into account such moments as the density and density of the green cover, the absence of yellow spots and traces of dryness, etc. Lawns with a grid of artificial materials (polymers) or on a substrate are not the best option for open ground, since they were grown in greenhouse conditions.
The composition of the mixtures of rolled grass
The herbs that make up the mixtures have different qualities and, accordingly, the purpose. Some of them give a dense green mass, others prevent the growth of weeds, others are resistant to drought, etc. Therefore, grass mixtures are used in such lawns. Herbs with different properties complement each other well.
Below are the most popular blends:
- universal (bluegrass - 60%, fescue - 30%, ryegrass - 10%);
- for cultivation in shading (fescue - 80%, bluegrass - 20%);
- tolerates trampling well, confidently recovers (bluegrass - 50%, red fescue - 25%, ryegrass - 25%).
Views
Depending on the constituent plants, roll lawns are distinguished by purpose and growing characteristics. Below are not all, but the most popular varieties.
Did you know? The 200 m² lawn is able to provide oxygen to a family of parents and two children.
Ground floor
He is English - characterized by exceptional decorativeness, solidity and stiffness, characteristic of the British, which is reflected in the title. Its main and only task is to decorate the territory. From early spring to the end of November, such a lawn has a beautiful appearance: an intense emerald color that goes well with any vegetation. This lawn is designed for landscaping parks, growing around monuments, state institutions, administrative institutions, etc.
Among the characteristic features are the following:
- in the composition of the mixture, most of it falls on narrow-leaved grasses, fescue and field grass;
- Needs regular care, watering, haircut;
- not intended for walking on it, both people and pets;
- requires special preliminary soil preparation.
In order for such a lawn to look truly luxurious, the following herbaceous plants are used:
- raspberry white and ordinary;
- choked;
- fescue;
- bluegrass;
- ryegrass.
There are many ready-made mixtures that differ in appearance, but related to the English type of lawns:
- Barenburg
- "Trifolium";
- "Emerald";
- Greenmedow
- Green Line.
Universal
The most common type among all. Although it belongs to the category of decorative, care is not as demanding as the ground floor. The density of planting is 1 kg / 30 m². Such a lawn is suitable for outdoor activities, such as a picnic area, for arranging a sunbathing area, etc.
Consists of the following herbs:
- red fescue and sheep;
- meadow bluegrass;
- pasture ryegrass and English.
Shadow
The name speaks for itself. This species is intended for cultivation in shaded glades. More precisely, it tolerates a deficit of sunlight better than others, since in such conditions any grass grows poorly. It requires the largest, most qualified and painstaking care among all types of lawns.
Important! No matter how good the shady lawn is, under the trees or near tall bushes, over time it will still begin to wither. To avoid this, periodic seeding is required, once every 2-3 seasons.
Some herbaceous plants still feel better in the shade than others, and of these make up such mixtures:
- perennial ryegrass - 15%;
- meadow bluegrass - 15%;
- fescue (sheep and red) - 30%;
- Sherpous fescue - 10%;
- Thin woodland - 5%.
Urban
It is used in conditions of high gas contamination, is well restored after trampling, and is resistant to aggressive urban environments. It can be grown anywhere in the territory of a large metropolis that needs landscaping: parks, recreation areas, squares, etc.
Among the popular mixtures of this type, the following can be distinguished:
- "City" (timothy grass meadow 15%, meadow fescue 50%, ryegrass 15%);
- "Road" (timothy grass meadow 30%, meadow fescue 40%, ryegrass 30%).
Mauritanian
It is distinguished by the presence of wildflowers, which is absolutely not like other varieties of lawns. It resembles, rather, a village meadow than a classic green lawn. Perfect for decorating suburban park areas and squares, for growing in suburban areas, in summer cottages. It is beautiful precisely with its natural appearance - it does not need a haircut and special care.
Important! Butterflies and bees flock to a Moorish lawn in large numbers. So, if there is an apiary near your site, this type of clearing is hardly suitable for you - a lot of insects can ruin your vacation.
Such compounds are created by adding wildflower seeds to the herbal mixtures:
- linen;
- Daisies
- poppy;
- forget-me-not;
- clover;
- bell and others
Advantages and disadvantages
- Among the advantages of laying a rolled lawn are the following:
- almost immediately after laying you will have a finished lawn with high-quality adult grass, you do not need to wait 2 seasons;
- weeds do not germinate through such material;
- no need for weeding;
- a damaged piece can be easily and quickly repaired - it is simply cut out and replaced with a new one;
- care measures are similar to those carried out on the sowing lawn;
- resistant to diseases, pests, summer drought and severe frosts;
- easy and quick to prepare for winter;
- quickly and easily take root in almost any new area, if necessary, it can be laid even in November.
- As for the cons, the main ones are as follows:
- the price is higher than the sowing lawn;
- since there are many producers of such vegetation, the buyer runs the risk of choosing a poor-quality coating that does not take root on the site well. Or after buying a lawn, you will see a similar offer at a lower price;
- grows worse in the shade;
- the condition of compatibility of the composition of the soil and the base of the lawn should be observed
- each roll weighs about 25 kg, an assistant may be needed for styling. Perhaps he will have to pay, which will increase the cost of laying;
- the service life is less than the sowing lawn, 5-6 seasons in the city, 10-15 years in the countryside.
Features of laying and rules for lawn care
The styling and care procedures cannot be called too complicated, but a sufficiently complete description of them will require a separate article. Therefore, in this context, you can limit yourself to some basic rules and recommendations on this topic. All preparatory work on leveling and preparing the soil should be done in advance so that the rolls do not dry out, waiting for laying.
Important! The maximum shelf life of rolled lawns does not exceed 24 hours. They should be laid as soon as possible after delivery.
Immediately after the delivery of the material, you will need to perform the following procedures:
- Lay the rolls in the shade on a level ground so that the grass does not crumple, and they themselves are not deformed.
- On the selected and pre-prepared surface, roll the rolls so that the edges of the adjacent ones overlap by 2-3 cm.
- After the grass layer has settled down and the lawn has settled, the edges are smoothed flat.
- In large areas, this procedure is performed using special rollers.
- If cracks have formed during laying, you just need to fill them with sand, and when the grass comes in, it will close them.
- After the rolls are stacked, in the next 2 weeks they will need regular watering with sprayers, the root system should in no case dry out.
Further care consists of traditional procedures:
- watering;
- top dressing;
- combing and cleaning;
- aeration
- a haircut.
For irrigation use special systemsthat carry out gentle sprinkling that is not harmful to the turf layer. At the same time, moisten the soil to a depth of 15 cm.Top dressing is similar to the activities carried out for sowing lawns. In spring and summer, complex mineral fertilizers are introduced, including potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as trace elements. Since the end of summer, the nitrogen content in fertilizers is minimized. The fact is that this element stimulates the growth of green mass, and before the onset of winter cold it is not necessary and even harmful - young immature shoots can become a victim of frost.
For better grass growth, it is necessary to remove garbage from the lawn and comb it. This procedure promotes the development of herbal rosettes and inhibits the growth of weeds. In addition, combing helps get rid of pests and prevents the development of diseases.Aeration (piercing the grass cover and the upper layer of the substrate) is an agrotechnical procedure, the purpose of which is to saturate the root system of plants and soil with oxygen. This event helps the plant to sufficiently obtain the element it needs and improves metabolic processes throughout the biosystem.
Lawn mowing is carried out from late spring to early fall. If the rolls are stacked recently, you can cut them no earlier than seven days after stacking. Even after this period, only the ends of the grass can be cut, a lower cut can harm the plants. The frequency of cutting is 1–1.5 weeks. It should be performed in dry weather, but in the absence of direct sunlight, after which the greens need to be watered.
In preparation for winter, the grass is cut off until the second decade of October, before frost. Otherwise, freshly cut tips and plants may freeze. By the time of the onset of winter, the recommended grass length is 4–6 cm. At this height of cover, for normal wintering, natural warming in the form of snow will suffice for it.
Did you know? A quality lawn, broken in front of a country house in a prestigious village, increases the market value of real estate by 10-15%.
Summing up, it should be said that a rolled lawn is an excellent solution for landscaping a wide variety of landscapes. A green lawn, created in this way, has a lot of advantages and only one significant drawback - a fairly high price.
