Given the high reproductive capabilities of cabbage aphids, in warm and moderately humid weather in 2019, one can expect mass reproduction of the pest on cabbage plantations.
Last year, the population of cabbage aphid crops was observed in all regions of Ukraine during the growing season of early, middle and late cabbage.
Aphids were populated on average 3-18%, a maximum of 24-36% of crops of early cabbage (in the Nikolaev and Khmelnitsky regions) in the weak and medium degrees.
In the middle and late cabbage, aphids damaged 6-26%, in the foci of Donetsk, Kiev, and Kharkov regions 70-100% of plants.
The density of the pest before the onset of frost ranged from 8-40 to 280 ind. per head, wintering stock - 2-9, maximum 16-28 eggs per head, which is more compared to the previous year.
For information, cabbage aphid is a dangerous pest of cabbage and rape. Propagating under favorable weather conditions, cabbage aphid populations are covered with a continuous carpet of young leaves and shoots. They suck out juice from plants, thus inhibiting their normal development.
In years with a cool summer, cabbage aphid especially reduces the increase in the mass of cabbage, depletes the shoots of seed plants and rape plants.
