According to an analysis conducted by the Republican Institute, employment in the rural, forest and fisheries sectors in Serbia is seriously declining.
While in 2016, 372,800 people were employed in the same sector, which is 15.9% of the total employment.
When it comes to how many men and how many women are employed in the country's agriculture, the data show that men have an advantage (17.7% versus 13.6% of total employment).
As for the regions, the highest share of employees in this sector was recorded in the regions of Sumadia and Western Serbia (27.4%), and the lowest - in the Belgrade region (3.2%), while in the regions of Vojvodina and Southern and Eastern Serbia it is 16.5% and 15.2%, respectively.
The age structure of family owners is very unfavorable. 42.5% of farmers are over 65 years old, 27.9% are 55-64 years old, 45-54 years old are 17.8% farmers and 8.7% are 35-44 years old. Under the age of 35, only 3.1% of the total number of farmers.
The largest holders of agricultural holdings under the age of 40 are in the region of Sumadia and Western Serbia - 8,730.
