In accordance with the bill, which will be presented shortly by the government, fur farms must cease their activities in Ireland.
The draft law of the Solidarity-PBP TD social movement, which is based on a ban on raising fur animals, was adopted as the basis. In a statement, Irish Minister of Agriculture Michael Creed said that the bill "will make it illegal to create any new fur farms."
It will also allow existing operators to gradually leave the sector. There are currently three mink fur farms in Ireland: Donegal, Leesch and Kerry, which produce about 110,000 hides per year.
The fourth fur farm was closed back in 2014. Members of the Solidarity-PBP TD public organization welcomed the government’s decision, but called for an urgent meeting with the minister to clarify the bill.
The National Association for the Protection of Animal Rights also approved the government decision, and its representative, Laura Broxon, said that continuation was unacceptable for the fur industry.
In the European Union, 14 member states have long banned the breeding of mink and other fur animals.
