The grape has been known to mankind for a long time and is considered one of the first berry plants that are cultivated by people. It is difficult to calculate the number of varieties cultivated in different countries. This article provides a detailed description of the pink variety of the popular Timur variety.
Appearance story
Timur grapes appeared due to the work of breeders from the Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking in the city of Novocherkassk. This institute successfully conducted work on the selection of varieties that would tolerate the harsh climatic conditions of the northern region.
Among these hybrids, about half a century ago, Timur was created, the parent pair of which were two varieties - Frumoasa Albe (translated from Romanian - white beauty) from Moldova and the local hybrid Rapture. It is no coincidence that the new variety was given the name Timur: in Turkic languages it means “iron”, and the variety really came out persistent and hardy.
Did you know? The area planted with vineyards on our planet is about 80,000 square kilometers. And the whole harvest is used: 71% - for wine production, 27% - goes directly to the public, 2% - for raisins.
Initially, the hybrid was only white, and later, by the efforts of breeders from the city of Zaporozhye, its pink cousin appeared by crossing with the Vostorg Krasny variety. The new hybrid form is called Timur Pink.
General information about the grape variety "Timur"
This variety has remarkable features that distinguish it from others.
Description of the appearance of the variety
The bushes are neat, small in size. The vine has a brown color and grows well, so this variety is often grown as a hedge. Leaves of medium size, with a wrinkled surface, three-fingered shape, carved edges. The bush blooms with small light green flowers. Each flower is bisexual and self-pollinated.
The fruits are large, each weighing up to 10 grams, their nipple shape, a bunch is formed in the form of a cone or cylinder. The density of grape brushes is average, the weight is 400-600 grams, and individual specimens - even 800.
Important! Due to the good sweetness, Timur berries attract various insects, including wasps. This can lead to a significant loss of crop, therefore protection in the form of traps or shelter with a mesh is needed.
Description of the main characteristics of grapes
Timur grapes belong to the white table varieties and has the following characteristics:
- excellent frost resistance, withstands up to -25 ° C;
- good survival of seedlings, they are easily grafted onto other bushes;
- early ripening of fruits;
- sweet taste (sugar 25%), with nutmeg notes;
- berries are first light green in color, then in the process of ripening amber hues appear;
- the berry skin is thin, easily torn;
- pulp is characterized by density and characteristic crunch.
Disease and pest resistance
This hybrid is highly resistant to grape diseases such as mildew, oidium, gray rot. He inherited these remarkable properties from his ancestors.
Timur's application
Berries are used:
- directly to food;
- for the production of juice and wine;
- for raisins.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
- The benefits of this grape:
- berries ripen early, after flowering only 110 days pass;
- berries are juicy, fragrant, with crisp flesh and delicate peel;
- good resistance to widespread characteristic diseases;
- high frost resistance allows you to grow a variety in the northern regions;
- good yield with an average bush size.
- But there are some disadvantages:
- if the seedlings are placed next to large grape bushes, the young growth will be poorly developed, therefore there is a need to vaccinate Timur for taller varieties;
- Demanding on the type of soil, which must be loose and not moist;
- with high frost resistance in general, the vine itself does not tolerate large frosts, so there is a need for shelter for the winter period.
Grape variety Timur pink
The younger brother of white Timur, pink, is not so common, but his unusual color and extremely sweet berries found their regular fans among lovers of grape growing.
Differences and similarities with the more popular white
The pink hybrid is similar to white in that it has the same frost resistance, gives a good harvest, reproduces well and can easily be grafted onto any stock.
Important! Due to its high calorie content, Timur Pink should be used by people who are prone to being overweight or insulin-dependent, with caution.
And here are its distinguishing features:
- the bush has a stronger growth;
- grapes have a beautiful pinkish tint, which increases its decorativeness and attractiveness;
- bunches and berries are larger;
- the fruits contain more sugar, which means that the calorie content of this species is higher;
- the peel is slightly thicker, does not crack so much, but is not at all hard, does not cause difficulties in chewing;
- fruit ripening occurs a little later, after about 120-130 days.
- clusters are less dense and have gaps, the shape is conical;
- less resistant to grape diseases, requires periodic treatment with fungicides as a prophylaxis, especially against ticks.
Features of planting and growing varieties of grapes Timur
It's time to familiarize you with the requirements for planting and growing this hybrid, subject to which you will receive well-developed bushes and excellent harvest.
What soil does grape like
Timur is quite picky about the soil on which it grows. On inappropriate soil, the fruits will be completely different from what you want - they will be smaller, smaller and sour. Therefore, it is important to provide the seedling with good soil, namely loose, nutritious and breathable, its acidity should be 5.5–7.0 pH.
Loamy and loamy soils have such requirements.
If you have unsuitable soil, it must be cultivated to suitable values.
What seedlings are better to take for planting
Seedlings for planting can be obtained using the following agricultural techniques:
- growing from seed (very time consuming, but interesting);
- use of bends;
- cuttings and further grafting to the roots of already mature bushes, even belonging to other varieties.
Each grower uses a method that he likes. But, according to statistics, the best results are obtained in the case of root grafts to varieties that are larger and less picky about the soil. It is with this technique that a significant increase in yield is observed.
The age of the young plant is also important. It’s good if it is a one-year-old, which quickly adapts to new conditions.
Equally important is the condition of the young seedling during the acquisition and planting. It must meet the following requirements:
- the root system is not damaged, not dry, it has no signs of disease, it is necessary to have several heel roots, the diameter of which is more than 2 millimeters;
- seedling height not less than 40 centimeters;
- there are at least 4–5 eyes on the vine;
- if there are leaves, make sure they are normally developed and not damaged.
Grape planting
An important condition for good survival of seedlings is the correct choice of location. Plant where there is no shadow, but there is protection against drafts. In addition, always place bushes on the south side of the house and maintain a distance of 3-4 meters from it.
To prepare high-quality seedlings, you need to know when the time comes for their planting.
Landing time
If you plan to plant seedlings in adult bushes, it is best to do this in spring (April, May). During the warm period, young growth will take root well and will enter the cold without any problems.
If you use the root planting of seedlings, it is advisable to do this in the fall (September, October). During this period, the maximum concentration of useful elements and moisture is concentrated in the earth.
Grape Care Features
Timur belongs to those varieties that are extremely in need of proper care, otherwise the bush will simply wither. However, ensuring optimal conditions is not at all difficult.
Proper watering of grapes
The grape bush is subject to mandatory watering before flowering and in the state of initial fruit formation.
Of course, if you live in an arid area and rains are a rare occurrence, then additional watering is required, which the plant itself will tell you about.If the foliage is drooping, then moisture is not enough.
Watering the bushes must be done carefully, manually, using warm and settled water, directly into the trunk circle.
Important! Never water the vineyards when they began to bloom, or the ripening process of the fruits has begun. Watering at this time can lead to falling flowers or cracks in the berries.
Grape pruning
In terms of pruning, Timur is no different from his brethren and needs this procedure, because it allows you to properly form a bush and achieve a quality crop.
Trimming is performed as follows:
- in the fall - each fruiting vine is pruned and about 10 buds are left;
- in spring - young shoots are removed, you need to leave from 20 to 30 eyes.
How to prepare for winter
The variety needs shelter for the winter period - this procedure is recommended to be done after autumn pruning and before the onset of frost. To do this, the branches are neatly bent to the ground, laid on pre-prepared fir branches or sawdust.Grapes are also covered from above, for which you can use dry reeds, spruce branches or just pour a small amount of earth. You can pour snow, if any.
Top dressing
Grape bushes need to be fed at least twice a year. For this, organic and mineral fertilizers are used. The most important thing is not to overdo it with nitrogen fertilizers, the excess of which negatively affects the normal development of the plant.
Disease Prevention and Pest Protection
Preventive measures in order to avoid grape diseases and protect against possible pests must be done before the flowering of the vines and immediately after.
Usually use treatment with a solution of copper sulfate (fights with mildew), a solution of colloidal sulfur (fights with oidium). To destroy the tick, you have to use acaricides, for example, Actellic.
Did you know? The Spaniards and the Portuguese have an unusual New Year's custom. When the clock starts to beat 12 times and the New Year arrives, people eat one grape with each hit and make a wish.
The Timur grape variety was obtained relatively recently, but has spread widely and is grown even in regions with severe winters. It is recommended by both experts and amateurs, so if you have plans for planting new grape bushes, be sure to pay attention to this option. We wish you good harvests!
